Transforming Trauma VictoriaTransforming Trauma Victoria is a new comprehensive service providing mental health support to Victorians affected by trauma. Transforming Trauma Victoria is the world’s first jurisdiction-wide trauma service. Transforming Trauma Victoria is a Statewide Trauma Service which practices with a cross-disciplinary approach.

Trauma impacts 90% of individuals in the public mental health system, yet it often remains unrecognised and unaddressed. Transforming Trauma Victoria aims to change this.

Addressing trauma-related ill health presents two significant challenges. Firstly, many Victorians do not receive the evidence-based responses and services they require. Secondly, due to the long-standing oversight of trauma impacts, there is limited knowledge about the best care practices for specific groups.

Acknowledging these challenges, the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System recommended the creation of a Statewide Trauma Service. Since November 2023, this service has been known as Transforming Trauma Victoria, dedicated to supporting those affected by trauma through mental health care, education, and research.

Transforming Trauma Victoria is pioneering as the world’s first jurisdiction-wide trauma service. By collaborating with hundreds of Victorians living with trauma, partnering with over one hundred organizations, and testing ideas through regional and metro pilots, Transforming Trauma Victoria is poised to develop, deliver, and disseminate best practices in trauma care.

Following a competitive tender process, a consortium led by Phoenix Australia, in collaboration with twelve other state and national leaders in mental health care, was appointed to design and establish the service in 2023. Phoenix Australia, affiliated with the University of Melbourne, has been at the forefront of advancing trauma care for almost thirty years.

Other collaborating partners include VACCA; Australian Psychological Society; Austin Health; Berry Street; the Bouverie Centre; Foundation House; Mindful; the Royal Melbourne Hospital; Orygen; The Royal Women’s Hospital (Including CASA House); SANE Australia and Thorne Harbour Health. Collectively, they bring breadth and depth of expertise in a range of priority populations, age groups, therapeutic approaches, and service contexts.

Recognising this as a ground-breaking initiative, the Victorian Government has made a foundational investment in the collaborative to enhance trauma care. By partnering with major universities and training providers, Transforming Trauma Victoria aims to develop the future workforce and attract national and international research and training investment. Its adaptable design allows rapid response to community needs, such as natural disasters and community tragedies.
